Research is fundamental to the development and delivery of Higher Education. At BU, we recognise this and place research at the core of our activities. The quality and breadth of our research is reflected in the success of our specialised Research Centres.
We are committed to further improving our research profile and have put in place comprehensive mechanisms to support our staff and postgraduate researchers. These measures help to ensure that our research continues to improve our curriculum and provides the expertise that we make accessible to local, national and international organisations.
Our postgraduate researchers are encouraged to play a full part in the activities of the Research Centres and teams to which they belong, working with external partners where appropriate. Equally vital to success for all postgraduate researchers is access to high-quality training in research methods and theory. The Graduate School draws on the best expertise from our six Schools to develop training and support programmes and provide stimulation, insight, criticism and guidance. This ensures postgraduate researchers are exposed to ideas and experiences from outside their own discipline and encourages them to take a broader view of their studies.
We firmly believe that our academic education and research must be relevant to the wider world. We encourage the development of relationships with external partners in both the commercial and public sectors, to promote the exchange of knowledge into and out of the University. We seek to ensure that research is informed by the knowledge of our partners and that they have access to research outputs for the benefit of the economy and society. Our research has already changed people's lives: we aim to ensure that it continues to do so.
Such is our commitment to research that BU has offered almost 90 fully-funded PhD studentships over the past three years and will continue to offer them over the coming years.
