BU Fees and Funding
We know you'll have lots of questions about the new fees system and financial support. On this page, we'll try our best to give you as much information as we can about the changes and funding available to those of you starting at BU in 2012.
We would like to help clarify what this means for students applying to join us in 2012.
How much will BU's tuition fees be for undergraduate UK / EU students in 2012?
- The majority of our Honours courses will cost £8,200.
The new fee will allow us to continue to invest in an excellent student experience whilst maintaining quality programmes. - Our flagship courses will cost £9,000.
This recognises their global reputation together with their cost of delivery and competitive demand for student places. - The majority of our Foundation degrees will cost £6,000.
The majority of our Foundation degrees are delivered through regional partners at Further Education colleges who are our partners. This lower fee reflects our continued commitment to providing flexible entry routes into higher education.
Will there be any additional costs for my course?
All BU tuition fees are all inclusive and will not make additional charges for essential course elements. The only additional charges will be for optional/discretionary costs such as printing, the purchase of textbooks, optional placements and other items.
What is the cost for my industry placement / sandwich year?
The fees for students on a 40 week placement, as part of their course, during 2012/13 is £685, similar to the placement fee for 2012.
What will the fee be if I study part-time at BU?
Part-time fees will be pro-rata.
Will the fee increase year on year during my studies?
For 2012 entrants the fees will increase year on year in line with inflation (Retail Price Index).
Fees for post-2012 entrants' fees will be reviewed and decided on an annual basis and set within the relevant Government policies in place at the time.
I'm a student who is interested in studying a course which is currently funded by the Department of Health – will this affect me?
For students starting in 2012, both Degree and Advanced Diploma students will be funded in the same way. Students can apply for full fee assistance from the NHS bursary office to cover the cost of tuition, so you do not pay any fees yourself or need to take out a fee loan to cover this cost.
A new non- means tested Grant of £1,000 will be available together in addition to the NHS Means Tested Bursary. All NHS Funded students will also be able to take out a non-means tested maintenance loan.
Because Undergraduate and Diploma Students have their fees paid by the NHS they are not eligible for BU Bursaries or Scholarships.
Will this affect International student fees?
The changes to tuition charges for UK/EU students will not affect BU international students. To find out more about financing your studies as an international student, please visit our international student pages.
I'm currently a student at BU in my second year, what fees will I pay next year?
You will pay the fees already agreed when you started your course plus the yearly inflationary rises. Only undergraduate students starting in 2012 will be subject to the changes.
How can I find out more about fees for my 2012 course?
You can check our course search webpages for latest information on BU fees.
Who did BU consult with to reach these fee decisions?
The new fees have been developed in discussion with, and with input from, BU's Board, staff groups, students through the Students' Union, prospective students, partner and associate colleges.
What is the latest information about financial support available from BU?
BU Bursaries will be available to priority applicants with a programme of financial support based solely on ‘need' including family income, where you live or if you have been in care. We have incorporated funding from the National Scholarship Programme in our BU bursaries
- The bursaries will be offered to students, who meet the eligibility criteria, in the form of fee waivers, cash awards and accommodation bursaries, of up to £6000 per year.
- BU is proud to be matching the Government's funding from the National Scholarship Programme, and will be investing £750,000 for scholarships and bursaries for 2012/13 rising annually to £3 million by 2017/18.

What are the fees and support packages from 2013?
Our fees and funding packages apply to new students for the 2012/13 academic year. The student support package for 2013/14 and future years has not yet been decided by the Government and may change for both new and continuing students. More information will be available in Spring 2012.
