Talbot Campus

We have organised our virtual tour around several key categories – which is most interesting for you?

Student Life

A short distance from the bus stop Poole House is the main entrance to Talbot Campus. The newly refurbished glass Atrium has a fair-trade café and relaxed seating zone. The Atrium shops lead onto our main student refectory, which offers hot and cold snacks, meals and drinks. The ground floor of Poole House is used as dedicated gallery space for our BU Art Collection, promoting regional artists’ working in a range of media.

The Student’s Union is a vital part of university life. It exists to represent and help you and membership is free. The Union supports a host of clubs and societies run by students for students. They range from horse riding and the boat club to the International Students’ Association or the film club. The Students’ Union shop sells a variety of fair-trade products, drinks, newspapers and magazines. It is well stocked with stationary supplies too.

Nerve Media* is your forum to have your say and get your work published. Nerve* includes a fully recycled magazine, two professional radio studios, a TV studio, a student designed website and a variety of events, so there is plenty to get involved in.

On Talbot campus there are two student bars: Dylan’s and The Loft. Both offer food and drink throughout the day and are a hive of activity for students with free time on their hands. The evenings provide a range of entertainment to suite all tastes including live music and a weekly quiz.

Student Well-being

Once you have enrolled at BU the askBU Students Service at The Base in Poole House will be your main point of contact for all non-academic enquiries. The team will be on hand to advise you on your accommodation, IT services, careers and placements.

We have more than 1,600 international students from 130 different countries studying at BU. A dedicated international advice centre is located with askBU Students Service for you to get help with immigration, financial and personal problems too.

Talbot Campus has an on-site medical centre providing advice on all aspects of health care, including meningitis, vaccinations and contraception. Professional counsellors are also on hand to help you if you are feeling the pressures of life from panic over exams to personal relationships.

The Multifaith Chaplaincy serves both staff and students of BU and the Arts University College at Bournemouth. There are three Chaplains available on Campus to help you; two Jewish Rabbis (Reform and Orthodox) and a Muslim Imam are available on an on-call basis.

Learning Spaces

On Talbot Campus there are 15 Lecture Theatres providing a welcoming, comfortable environment in which to learn. They are all well-equipped with state-of-the-art new media facilities.

The Sir Michael Cobham Library is a five storey dedicated learning centre, which provides access to extensive up-to-date resources. These include over 40,000 e-books, 18,000 e-journals and many databases as well as our established printed collections. Each of our degrees is supported by subject specialist librarians who work alongside Schools to provide advice on finding the best material for your studies. There are self-service photocopiers, colour printing and scanning facilities, and playback equipment for videos, DVDs and audio recordings. There is also a library on the Lansdowne Campus.

E-learning materials are available on myBU, which also provides access to discussion forums, wikis, blogs and podcasts. You may also be able to submit your assignments online. We will provide you with a mySearch login, a tool that trawls all our library resources and those on Google Scholar.

BU’s Additional Learning Needs Service (ALNS) provides a comprehensive and personalised framework of support for the many students with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, physical disabilities, medical conditions, developmental disorders (Aspergers Syndrome, ADHD/ADD) or mental health issues. We hope that all students with an Additional Learning Need will benefit fully from their time with us.

Sport & Recreation

We have recently invested £30,000 in our Fitness Suite, which includes a cardiovascular room, a vast array of resistance equipment, a free weights room and flat-screen TVs to keep you motivated while you work out. There are a range of membership packages and group fitness programmes which you can enrol in. Classes include: Yoga, Circuits, Spinning, Aerobics and Step.

Our sports leagues make best use of our four-court sports hall, two flood-lit Astro courts, floodlit rubber-based all-weather pitches, two natural turf football pitches and Dean Park Cricket Ground, widely regarded as the best university cricket ground in the UK. Recreational sports include: 6-a-side and 11-a-side football, social basketball and badminton, golf simulator league, netball, squash, tennis and badminton. We run 25 squads and individual sports at varsity level.

If you feel like a challenge, why not have a go on our unique climbing wall? Hot Rocks is a seven metre climbing wall, offering top rope and lead climbing for both novice and experienced climbers. The Wall also boasts a custom-designed bouldering facility with campus and finger board training devices.

Careers

BU’s strong professional orientation helps you prepare for the future. Close ties with the professional world means that our graduates can look forward to rewarding careers with tomorrow’s employers. We believe that the placement year plays a vital part in developing well-rounded and industry ready graduates. You can make important contacts during your studies (and in particular your placement year), with employers like JPMorgan, Intel and the NHS, to name a few. The Graduate Employment Service is on hand to offer you guidance on:
