Mark Austin

Mark Austin is an internationally respected journalist and broadcaster, best known currently as ITV's leading newscaster. He started his career in journalism on the Bournemouth Evening Echo and later worked for the BBC. Mr Austin joined ITN in 1986 and covered many of the major world stories of the past two decades, including both Gulf Wars, the Balkan conflict, the September 11 attacks, the Rwandan genocide, Hurricane Katrina and the Asian tsunami. He became the face of ITV news in 2006.

Professor Sir Brian Follett

Professor Sir Brian Follett is Chairman of the Training and Development Agency for Schools. An internationally reputed academic, he was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Warwick for 10 years. His 'Follett Reports' prompted greater government funding for university libraries to bring them into the 'electronic age'. He has written other government reports including the inquiry into the 2001 outbreak of foot and mouth disease. Sir Brian has also distinguished himself in other national roles such as the Chairmanship of the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and has received many high academic distinctions and awards.

Andrew Freemantle

Andrew Freemantle is the Chief Executive of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). In his earlier career he was a Brigadier in the Army and later Chief Executive of the Scottish Ambulance Service. At the RNLI he has inspired and led major developments, including the founding of the world's first Lifeboat College at Poole. In 2007 Mr Freemantle was appointed CBE for services to maritime safety.

Brian Graham

Brian Graham is a distinguished artist whose work is deeply influenced by his passion for landscape. After many years of painting his beloved Dorset, his work now encompasses a much wider terrain. He is inspired by archaeological sites, and many of his paintings capture a sense of links between past and present. Mr Graham has exhibited widely in Britain and Europe, and his works are displayed in many important collections. A long-standing supporter of art at the University, he helps in the selection of items for its art loan collection and exhibitions.

John Knowles

John Knowles is a prominent businessman and entrepreneur. As Chairman and formerly Managing Director, he led DEK Printing Machines Ltd, a Weymouth-based microelectronics company, to world leadership in its specialist field. For many years he was a member of the University Board, serving as Deputy Chairman and as Chairman of the Personnel Committee. Mr Knowles is also Deputy Chairman of Poole Foundation Trust Hospital. He plays a leading part in the development of entrepreneurship in schools.

Dr Gwyneth Lewis

Dr Gwyneth Lewis, an eminent member of the medical profession, is the Government's National Clinical Director for Maternal Health and Maternity Services. She took a leading part in Lord Darzi's recent review of NHS services and wrote Maternity Matters, the national strategy for the future development of maternal care. Dr Lewis also directs the UK Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths, a research project which has saved the lives of many mothers, and leads international campaigns to improve maternity care.

Andy Summers

Andy Summers has achieved an international reputation as a musician, songwriter and producer, in the genres of rock, pop and jazz. A rock and jazz guitarist of wide experience and versatility, he co-founded The Police and enjoyed huge worldwide success with the band in the 1980s, and again with their recent reunion tour. Mr Summers is also a published author and photographer.

Ken Stanley

Ken Stanley has distinguished himself as an inventor and entrepreneur. He founded BigHead, a Bournemouth-based company which supplies metal fastenings to many industries around the world. A longstanding BU supporter, he has inspired many students with his ingenuity and enthusiasm for innovative technology, good design and environmental sustainability.
