Marin Alsop is a musician of the highest rank who in 2007 became the first woman to head a major American orchestra, as Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony. She has also achieved great distinction as Principal Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra since 2002. In 2005 she was named a MacArthur Fellow, the first conductor ever to receive this most prestigious American honour and in 2007 she was given a European Women of Achievement Award.

Neal Butterworth Graduating

Neal Butterworth has been Editor of the Bournemouth Daily Echo and its associated papers since 1998. During this time the Echo has reached a wider readership while winning prestigious awards for its campaigns on humanitarian issues and it's fundraising. As an independently minded editor and columnist, Neal has become a leading and influential figure in Bournemouth and the surrounding area, with an acute insight into public life and politics.

Martin Clunes Graduating

Martin Clunes is an actor of national renown who has played in a very wide range of film, television and stage productions, and achieved a huge following for his role as Gary in Men Behaving Badly. His many other successes include the lead role in Doc Martin, the award-winning series produced by Buffalo Pictures, a production company which Martin owns with his wife Philippa Braithwaite, and in feature films such as Shakespeare in Love. He actively supports charities working for sick or disadvantaged children and young people including the Prince's Trust in Bournemouth.

Romy Fraser is an original and innovative entrepreneur, best known as a pioneer in the development, manufacture and retailing of natural medicines and toiletries. Neal's Yard Remedies, the company which she founded, sells over 1,400 products worldwide and in their 30 shops in the UK. She has established her manufacturing and distribution base in Dorset, in a purpose-built eco-factory at Peacemarsh near Gillingham. Romy has also co-published books on alternative medicine and beauty care.

Rev Dr David Hart Graduating

The Reverend Dr David Hart was Chaplain at Bournemouth University between 1999 and 2007. His impact on the University was immense. Countless students and staff turned to him for support and counsel in times of difficulty or crisis. He built and fostered a sense of community on campus and took a leading part in the internationalisation of the University. David Hart is now Coordinator for Initial Ministerial Education for the Diocese of Salisbury and the Bishop's Adviser for Pastoral Care of the Clergy.

Justin King Graduating

Justin King is the Chief Executive Officer of J Sainsbury plc, the prominent supermarket chain and provider of financial services. Appointed in 2004, when the company was facing severe challenges, he launched and led the restructuring and recovery programme which has enabled Sainsbury's to exceed its own ambitious growth targets. Previously he held senior executive appointments at Häagen-Dazs, ASDA and Marks & Spencer.

Bernard MacManus Graduating

Dr Bernard MacManus was the first Vice-Chancellor of Bournemouth University, until his retirement in 1994. Under his leadership the Dorset Institute grew significantly and achieved polytechnic status, which in turn enabled Bournemouth to become a university under the Further and Higher Education Act of 1992. He also extended the University's Talbot Campus and established the second campus at the Lansdowne.

John Wrighton Graduating

John Wrighton FRCS

John Wrighton has distinguished himself as an international champion athlete, a consultant in orthopaedics, and as High Sheriff of Dorset. He was Captain of the British team at the Rome Olympics in 1960. Later, as an orthopaedic surgeon, he was a pioneer of knee and hip joint replacement. He has made a number of major contributions to health provision and education in Dorset and strongly supported Bournemouth University as a member of the Board for eight years.
