Paralympic cycling hero to be honoured
Paralympic gold medal-winning cyclist Darren Kenny is to receive an honorary doctorate from BU during annual Award Ceremonies to be held at the BIC on Tuesday, 3 November at 10.30am.
Darren, one of Dorset′s most decorated international sportsmen, will become an Honorary Doctor of Arts. The award recognises his achievements in cycling and for setting an inspirational example of determination and perseverance against the odds.
Accidents and injuries seemed to have ended Darren′s career at the age of 18, but he returned to competitive cycling some years later and swiftly rose to the heights of international success. At the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing he won four gold medals and one silver, following two gold medals and one silver at Athens in 2004. He has been World Cup champion six times and holds numerous speed records.
Earlier this year, he was awarded an OBE for his outstanding achievements.
Darren joins representatives from the world of television, business, health and engineering in receiving Honorary Doctorates from BU. More than 4,500 graduates from the Universitys six academic schools will receive degrees, diplomas and professional qualifications at seven separate ceremonies over four days between Tuesday 3 and Friday 6 November at the BIC.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Curran:
BU congratulates all of this year′s graduates. This is a very special occasion for them, their families, their friends and the BU staff who supported them throughout their studies. We look forward to welcoming our graduating students to the BIC and sharing in the celebrations.
