Research Group Lead: Moira Walker
This group encompasses a wide range of work and research relating to social care and welfare, with a common emphasis on effective service delivery, a philosophy of supporting the involvement of service users, and the development of training that assists in these processes.
Two new groups have been formed within the last year:
Women's Mental Health Forum is based at the University with Moira Walker as Chair. The group is inter-disciplinary and inter-professional and aims to explore specific projects, to map services, and to monitor the implementation of policies for women locally.
Dorset Action on Abuse had its first meeting in January 2004. Its mission statement is 'To provide a forum where information, experience, and support can be shared amongst those working with, or involved with, survivors of childhood abuse'. It is also an inter-disciplinary, inter-professional group and both these new groups have a clear commitment to involving service users. Activities to date include:
Gaining funding for a one-day conference to launch the group in March 2005;
Forming a steering group;
Planning a series of seminars and meetings;
Developing a counselling service for survivors of abuse in conjunction with a mental health team at Poole Social Services.
The involvement of service users in developing the social work curriculum (Gail Stuart);
Learning and Teaching Development Initiative: funded evaluation of placements on-line (Anne Quinney);
Child abusers: recently published research aimed at assessing risk and physical danger to children (Professor Colin Pritchard);
Funded research project (Community Fund): 'Practicing partnership and inclusion - a participative enquiry with older gay men and lesbians' (Lee Ann Fenge in partnership with 'Help and Care');
The impact of child abuse on adult couple relationships (Moira Walker);
