The programme reflects the government’s strategy regarding support for people with learning disabilities, i.e. Valuing People (2001), relevant National Service Frameworks, disability discrimination and human rights legislation, and the development of anti-oppressive practice. The programme aims to help promote healthy and fulfilling lives for children and adults with a learning disability, as well as for their families, working towards health and well being for all. The broad goal is to promote rights, independence, real choices and inclusion in society.
This is a three year full time programme (which must be completed within five years of first enrolling).
Year 1 is a broad introductory foundation year, years 2 and 3 are a more specialised Learning Disability Pathway where you undertake more advanced and specialised study.
Both the foundation programme and the later specialist Pathway in years 2/3 includes periods of study (theory) and practice, organised into ‘blocks’. The programme concludes with ten weeks of practice that will consolidate your period of study and prepare you to make the transition to becoming a qualified practitioner. The course reflects both a uni-professional (nursing) focus, as well as inter-professional one where some learning takes place with and alongside students undertaking other health and social care programmes at this university, i.e. Social Workers and Occupational Therapists so that experiences and view points can be shared
You are entitled to seven weeks annual leave per year throughout the programme, the dates of which you will be given when you enrol.
