Mental Health Nursing

Current statistics suggest that as many as 1 in 4 adults will suffer from some sort of mental illness. The role of the Mental Health Nurse is to enable and educate, in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, to encourage individuals to progress toward recovery and integration into the community.

On some occasions therapeutic intervention may not be welcome and it is therefore important for the Mental Health Nurse to understand and appreciate what is happening to an individual in order to find suitable ways of assisting them. This will require a wide range of skills derived from a variety of theoretical perspectives - psychology, sociology, psychiatry and the roots of psychotherapy.

Mental Health nurse training will act as preparation for a role in multidisciplinary work with various healthcare professionals, and as a foundation for career development into such areas as counselling, psychotherapy, family therapy and addiction therapy.

BSc (Hons) Nursing With Professional Registration (Mental Health Nursing)

Before attending the course, I ran my own business and I was able to make what at first seemed like a difficult transition through the tremendous support of the University lecturers, fellow students and particularly placement supervisors. I even managed to surprise myself at what I was able to achieve. I have found mental health nursing varied, interesting and very person centred and I benefited from the variety of placement experiences available in this area. The students on the course are of all ages and although many were younger than I was, I didn't feel out of it being a mature student.

I have been particularly impressed by the number and variety of placement experiences offered here ranging from acute, rehabilitation, drugs and alcohol, community assertive to outreach, as well as child and adolescent.
