The Academic Group of Midwifery, Rehabilitation and Health Sciences at Bournemouth University is committed to high quality, life long learning, which takes account of local and national targets for health. Our educational approach seeks to work with, as well as develop, advances in science and technology. The strategic direction of the Academic Group is firmly based on the principles of collaborative partnership and an inclusive approach which involved users of our services as well as other professional groups in health, social care and education.
We have a reputation for working closely with key stakeholders in determining the needs and provision of ongoing pre-registration, post registration and postgraduate midwifery education that is relevant to the maternity and child health services of the 21st Century.
Our education and practice provision is underpinned by a philosophy of women and family centred care, with a strong focus on the centrality of normality and an approach to service delivery that is flexible, evidence based, and makes best use of available resource. We strive to develop practitioners who are individually accountable and autonomous, yet value and work well within a multidisciplinary approach to care. As such we provide inter-professional education opportunities throughout our pre and post registration programmes and actively encourage students to caseload women taking responsibility, under the direction of a qualified practitioner, to provide continuity of care through pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period.
