Bournemouth University Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Curran with BU Students BU’s “magnificent achievement” in The Guardian University Guide consolidates its position as Number One New University.

Bournemouth University (BU) has maintained its position as the UK’s leading ‘new’ University for the second consecutive year according to The Guardian University Guide (2010). Overall, BU has risen five places to 32nd overall. This puts Bournemouth first amongst the institutions which have become universities since 1992 and also means that BU has out performed many older institutions. During the last four years alone, Bournemouth has leapt a remarkable 48 places in The Guardian Guide.

Social work has risen nine places to 21st out of 73 while Nursing and Paramedical Studies has risen six places to 50 in the Guardian University Guide.

Professor Jonathan Parker, Associate Dean in Social & Community Work at Bournemouth University expressed his jubilation “the ranking is a great testament to the hard work, scholarship and student-centredness of all staff who strive to ensure the social work programme is successful in educating academically able and competent practitioners”. Professor Elizabeth Rosser, Associate Dean in Nursing was delighted with the Nursing and Paramedical results saying “this reflects the team’s focus and energy on continually improving the student experience”.

We aim, through our commitment to high quality scholarship and education, to continue to rise through the league tables, continually striving for ever greater markers of excellence.

A real cause for celebration......

Other recent successes include:

  • External panel of subject experts and professional body representatives validated our new curricula for the undergraduate pre-qualifying programmes with exceptional results in the quinquennial curricular review
  • The annual review saw student satisfaction in our teaching rise to 80%, a growth of 10%
