“This is an important milestone for us and our students at BU in recognising the highest standards of professional education in nutrition,” said Dr Jane Murphy, Framework Lead for Nutrition & Exercise Science in the School of Health & Social Care (HSC) at BU. This new accreditation demonstrates that the content of the course is rooted in a science–based tradition with a rigorous approach to evidence, the sharing of best practice and lifelong learning.

The Association for Nutrition (AfN) is the professional body for the regulation and registration of nutritionists. It aims to protect the public and promote wellbeing by only admitting those who demonstrate high ethical and quality standards to the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN). The UKVRN was established to recognise and encourage high standards of professional training in nutrition.

Registration to the UKVRN is a mark of professionalism and an indication of quality assuring potential employers that graduates have covered set competencies – making them more employable. Graduates from accredited courses have the right to apply for direct entry at ‘Associate’ level to the UKVRN, which would entitle them to use the letters ANutr/APHNutr after their names. This really helps to ensure our graduates stand out in today’s tough jobs market. It puts them at a distinct advantage, especially when compared to graduates who are coming from non–accredited courses.

Nutrition is a growing and competitive field today, with Universities offering a variety of nutrition courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level. More than 20 Universities currently run courses that have been accredited by the Association, and this number is set to grow in the near future. With an increasing number of institutions running accredited courses, it will soon be a disadvantage to not offer an accredited course.
