BU postgraduate researcher Jaana Jeffery BU postgraduate researcher contributes to NHD’s ‘Day in the Life’ series.

Oncology dietician Jaana Jeffery has given the readers of Network Health Dietetic magazine an insight into her daily life as a postgraduate researcher at Bournemouth University. Janna has written about her transition from practitioner to researcher for NHD’s ‘Day in the Life’ series (Issue 65).

Jaana has recently put aside her clinical work to study a PhD full-time within the Centre of Postgraduate Medical Research and Education. For the next few years, she will investigate why women with breast cancer seem to gain weight following their diagnosis. Jaana plans to explore whether this weight gain is linked to something biological or psychological and what part, if any, the medical management of the disease might play.

“It’s exciting to be part of something so dynamic and forward-thinking,” writes Jaana of the Centre which is based in the University’s School of Health and Social Care. “Many of the research students are nurses, medics or healthcare professionals.

“What is great about my PhD is that, not only do I have the academic side which I really enjoy, but I also have contact with patients and clinical staff,” said Jaana who hopes that the article might encourage others to consider following her path into resarch. “Contact with healthcare professionals and patients reminds me why I am doing this research. It motivates me to keep going and to the best I can for these women who have kindly given up their time, under such terrible circumstances, to talk to me. Hopefully I will have some interesting results in the next year or so.”
