The Health and Social Care Awards are the flagship awards of the Department of Health and coincide with this year’s 60th anniversary of the NHS. The awards, open to all health and social care staff, recognised the inspiring and passionate work that goes in to helping and caring for thousands of people every day of the year.
The awards also highlight and celebrate innovation and excellence and recognise and encourage working together across organisations and professions, with patients, service users and local people.
Nurse Practitioner Jill Richards successfully led a community nurse team at Lordshill Health Centre near Southampton to winning the ‘Improving Access’ category of the award scheme. The award was in recognition of a health club for older vulnerable people who find it difficult to access primary care provision. The health club was set up within a warden controlled accommodation in order to provide direct support for enabling people to successful manage the problems of living with long term conditions, reducing social exclusion and facilitating multidisciplinary input such as the presence and expertise of pharmacists.
Jill attributes her success to the skills she learnt on the Nurse Practitioner programme which enable her to lead in the provision of comprehensive care to the residents and the encouragement of Dr. Bernie Edwards her course tutor. This innovative work has been jointly published by Jill Richards and Dr. Edwards in the February 2008 edition of the Journal of Community Nursing.
All the winners from the NHS South and Central Health and social care awards will go through to the national awards hosted by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement. South Central Strategic Health Authority is an organisation formed by a merger of Thames Valley and Hampshire Isle of Wight health authorities and therefore covers an area from Milton Keynes to the Isle of Wight.
