Handheld Learning Awards 2008 Finalist A recent HSC project was nominated for a Handheld Learning 2008 Award. |
A project investigating the use of the Nintendo DS Lite mobile gaming device as an assistive technology tool for HSC students was recently shortlisted for an award at the Handheld Learning 2008 conference. The project was one of three, all supported by the JISC TechDis HEAT scheme, which swept the board for nominations in the Special Needs - Innovation category at this year's prestigious Handheld Learning Awards.
The project investigated the use of the Nintendo DS Lite mobile gaming device alongside Brain Training, Big Brain Academy and Opera Browser software packages as assistive technology tools for health and social care students, presented key findings concerning the use of a mobile gaming device within a Higher Education (HE) environment and also aimed to raise awareness of some of the educational possibilities for students and staff, including improving numeracy skills and providing mobile web access.
Although the Open University ERA project took the award home on the night at the awards ceremony held in London on October 13th, HSC was delighted to have made it into the final three despite stiff competition.
A paper detailing the work undertaken on the project was also recently disseminated at mLearn 2008, the world's flagship mobile learning conference.
