Our wide-ranging research and consultancy publications fall into three main areas (detailed below) and we hope you will find them a useful reference, as well as an illustration of our commitment to improving the quality of social work practice in the UK.

Two pieces of research might be of particular interest to you. Together they demonstrate to good effect our positive relationship with employer organisations such as Learn to Care and Skills for Care.

Learn to Care represents people engaged in the management and implementation of workforce development in the social care sector – on their behalf, and for the last 6 years, we have undertaken an annual survey to see how the Department of Health's workforce development grants are being used in England. The findings make interesting reading and are available on the Learn to Care website.

The second piece of research is a project to track the learning and development needs of newly qualified social workers that we were commissioned by Skills for Care to complete in 2007.

Skills for Care is responsible for the strategic development of the adult social care workforces in England.

We evaluated newly qualified social workers' perceptions of the effectiveness of the new social work degree and their induction and/or probation periods, and tracked their progress towards post-qualifying education.

What we found was that the new social work degree appears to prepare most newly qualified social workers with the right knowledge, understanding and skills for their first post.

However, there are a number of learning and development issues that require attention, such as the development of court skills. The findings of this report were even discussed in the House of Lords! (Hansard, 2007, House of Lords, 8 Oct, col 88-94)
