Postgraduate Research

Bournemouth University offers a variety of qualifications that can be earned through research in areas where we have relevant expertise. In HSC these are:

  • MPhil - Master of Philosophy
  • PhD - Doctor of Philosophy
  • Doctor of Professional Practice

MPhil

An MPhil is a project of around 40,000 words, produced through critical investigation and evaluation of an approved topic, and demonstrating an understanding of research methods appropriate to the chosen field. Normally completed in 24 months full-time and 36 months part-time.

PhD

A PhD is a project of around 80,000 words, produced through critical investigation and evaluation of an approved topic resulting in an independent and original contribution to knowledge, and demonstrating an understanding or research methods appropriate to the chosen field. Normally completed in 36 months full-time and 72 months part-time.

PhD - Doctor of Philosophy


Doctor of Professional Practice

This programme can be completed whilst in part-time or full-time employment and is ideal for health and social care professionals from a range of backgrounds including: lecturer practitioners who have completed masters studies; practitioners aspiring to be a nurse or therapy consultants; service leaders and managers from a variety of health and social care organisations including general practitioners, psychotherapists and counsellors, and educationalists.
