Research

Research is an integral part of academic scholarship in the School of Health and Social Care (HSC). Our research success has been built on strong academic – practice partnerships that address real world questions. At the heart of this work is an endeavour to improve the lives of people, either directly through service delivery or the education of professionals providing health and social care.

Research in HSC embraces a range of different methodologies and favours inter–disciplinary teams working together. Research projects take place at regional, national and international level. Our research achievements have been formally recognised in the national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). For example, in our ‘Nursing & Midwifery’ submission (RAE 2008) over forty percent of our research outputs were deemed internationally excellent.

We have a vibrant postgraduate community of over 250 students with over 100 of these being doctoral students who are completing either a PhD or a Doctorate of Professional Practice. We host international conferences and regularly hold masterclasses delivered by world–renowned scholars. Academic staff in HSC are frequently invited to present their work internationally. Visit the Centres to see a rich showcase of our current work and activity and associated staff.
