EndNote - Personal Bibliographic Software
Information for lecturers, researchers and postgraduate students

The University has purchased a 3 year site licence for EndNote v9.0 beginning in May 2006. EndNote is a necessary tool for managing references for those involved in teaching, research and supervising postgraduate research students. EndNote replaces ProCite as the preferred Personal Bibliographic Software for the University. ProCite users have the option of continuing to use ProCite, which in our view remains an appropriate and robust piece of software, or converting to EndNote.

The information here explains why Personal Bibliographic Software is a useful tool, how to get a copy of EndNote and how to convert ProCite databases to Endnote.

About EndNote and PBS packages

EndNote is a Personal Bibliographic Software (PBS) package designed to manage bibliographic references to all kinds of information:

  • printed sources; books, journal articles, conferences and reports.
  • non-print materials; videos, CD's and tapes.
  • electronic resources; web pages and e-mails.

EndNote and PBS packages have many advantages over general purpose database management packages. They enable you to:

  • store and retrieve records using a sophisticated retrieval interface;
  • input data manually, directly from the Internet or download from databases;
  • work with Microsoft Word to cite references directly from EndNote databases into your word documents;
  • choose from citation styles used by professional institutions and publishers to produce reference lists and bibliographies;
  • seamlessly download into your personal EndNote database from many major bibliographic databases;
  • share files of references with colleagues and publish your own databases on the Internet.

Why use EndNote

EndNote is one of three serious personal bibliographic software packages currently available. Other packages are Procite External Link and Reference Manager External Link. We understand that the owners of ProCite will not be upgrading the current version of ProCite and that EndNote is the preferred software product going forward.

It is possible to exchange files between these packages.

Library and Learning Support recommends EndNote because of the:

  • flexibility in editing input and output formats;
  • interfaces with Microsoft Word, using the Cite while you write facility;
  • supports many of the databases to which the library provides access.
  • choose from citation styles used by professional institutions and publishers to produce reference lists and bibliographies;
  • seamlessly download into your personal EndNote database from many major bibliographic databases;
  • share files of references with colleagues and publish your own databases on the Internet.

Subject Librarians use EndNote v9.0. This means they can easily exchange files with researchers and staff who are using EndNote within the University. Subject Librarians can also offer advice and guidance on both using EndNote and the value of personal bibliographic software for research.

Continuing ProCite Users

ProCite remains a robust and appropriate piece of software although it is unlikely to be developed beyond its current version. Users who currently use ProCite have the option of continuing to use it. You might consider this if you are a research student nearing the end of an extended piece of research such as a PhD thesis, are familiar and comfortable with the software and do not want to take on learning new software at this stage of your research.

If you are planning to continue to use Personal Bibliographic Software, regularly share bibliographic information with colleagues and supervise PhD students we would recommend that you use EndNote.
