The environment, noise & PCs

Silent zones and group study present a tension when designing space to learn that fulfils everyone's needs. In the Student Satisfaction Survey 2004-05 the environment and noise received 7 critical comments but also received 2 in the praise of the efforts of staff to control noise.

Improvements have been made each year and our concept of providing a variety of zones was praised in the citation for our winning the quinquennial SCONUL Library Design award in 2007.

In November 2007 we provided all our shelvers with  t-shirts printed with reminders about the silent study zones. They now wear these when re-shelving the stock, this has improved our success in getting the message about the zones across to all our users.

In Summer 2008 the reconfiguring of half of the ground floor of The Sir Michael Cobham Library to accommodate more group social learning spaces has had a further beneficial effect on the levels of silence maintained in the silent study zones.

In 2009 we introduced booking for some of our PCs. The PCs on the silent 3rd and 4th floors can be booked for 3x 3 hours in any 7 day period. We have 6 Techno Booths in The Sir Michael Cobham Library, 5 in the Library i-floor at the Executive Business Centre and by Christmas 2009 there will be 4 in Bournemouth House Library.
