Helping Research Students find Information

We recognise that research Supervisors play a key role in encouraging students to use the services and resources available to them. We would welcome support from supervisors in directing students to these services/resources:

Subject Librarians

Subject Librarians - are the key contact in the Library and can advise on services and resources available. Subject Librarians can also provide tailored support to researchers to ensure that their information search skills reach the required level.

Reflection on researchers own information skills

Reflection on researchers own information skills - we would encourage all researchers to reflect on any gaps, areas where they would like to improve or practice in using resources with which they are unfamiliar. This is important for all researchers but especially those who may have been out of higher education for a period of time or international researchers who may not be familiar with recent developments in electronic delivery.

EndNote - Personal Bibliographic Software [PBS]

The University now has a site licence for EndNote and researchers can purchase a copy for their home computer at an educational price. EndNote is a powerful tool for managing references and we would encourage students to use it from the start of their research.

Using other Libraries, Archives and Collections

Student may have requirements to use other academic libraries, national libraries and archives or private collections. Subject Librarians are happy to advise on what resources are available outside Bournemouth University and to facilitate access to collections and archives. There are also established mechanisms for access to Academic Libraries in the UK (Researcher Extra) and the British Library.

Knowledge of resources

Do encourage students to familiarise with the resources in their area as a preparatory to their literature search. We would hope to avoid students 'discovering' resources once they are into this phase of their research. Subject Librarians are the best point of contact. The Library Website has a number of areas for resources by Subject and these will also be valuable indicators.
