Athens personal accounts expire on 31st October
Athens personal accounts created before 1st August 2009 will expire on 31st October 2009. For continued off campus access to Athens authenticated resources you should self-register for a new account. Details of how to do this can be found below. Please note: the self-registration process must be completed from a pc within the University campus. Please ask at a library information desk if you require further assistance. Staff can extend their personal account on request for a further year by e-mailing Athens Help.

Introduction to Athens
The Athens Access Management System controls access to a wide range of e-resources using
a secure 'single sign-on' process.
There are three types of account, Access, Personal and Self-Registration. It is recommended that you self-register for a Personal Account, because
- Personal Accounts provide off-campus access;
- you benefit from the personalised features of MyAthens;
- to use some e-resources, such as Digimap, an Athens Personal Account is compulsory.
Personal accounts
Personal accounts provide access to e-resources both on- and off-campus. You create a Personal account by self-registration. The accounts expire at the end of each academic year and you will need to register for a new account at the start of each new academic year. Provision will be made for students during their placement year to ensure that personal accounts are enabled if required. Contact your Subject Librarian if you require access to resources during your placement year.
Your Athens Personal Account is confidential and for your sole use. You should not share the information with anybody else.
Register for a Personal Account.
Self-registration accounts
Self-registration accounts are used to create Personal Accounts. Each Academic School of the University is assigned a unique account. Self-registration accounts themselves do not enable access to resources.
Access and Self-registration account details can be obtained from the myBU Library Tab.
Access accounts
Access accounts are used to gain access to resources from computers
on-campus only. Each Academic School of the University is assigned a
unique account. Access accounts will not enable access to resources
when you are off-campus.
Note:
- Athens accounts are only available to staff and registered students
of Bournemouth University.
- Licence agreements of the electronic resources made available
specifically exclude use that would be of significant benefit
to the employer of students on placement.
Copyright reminder
Please remember the use of all electronic resources made available
to authorised users are subject to the terms and conditions of the
licence agreements made between Bournemouth University and the Service
Providers. Authorised users are governed by Section 23 of the University Rules (PDF), Information, Computing and Technology
and the terms and conditions associated with the electronic
resources provided.
By using an Athens account you are also agreeing to the Eduserv Athens terms and conditions of use.
