The Centre for Policy on Ageing database of information. References (most with summaries) to books, journal articles, statistical sources, reports, government publications on older age issues. Also details, history and activities of over 4,000 organisations in the field of older age, a calendar of events covering courses and conferences, plus the CPA's code of good practice for residential and nursing home care. Aimed at service providers, practitioners, policy makers, researchers, and students.

BestBETs

 

BestBETs is a database of rapid evidence-based answers to real-life clinical questions principally in emergency medicine, using a systematic approach to reviewing the literature. The database also includes a significant number of BETs (=Best Evidence Topics) covering cardiothoracics, nursing, primary care and paediatrics.

BNI (British Nursing Index)

The global resource for best evidence in healthcare, comprising a collection of databases of randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews, health economics and methodologies. Access to The Cochrane Library is free for all residents of England - no login is required.

H1N1 (Influenza) Searchable Information Center

 

Freely accessible interactive database of H1N1 (influenza) documents in PDF format. These are selected from government agencies and other authoritative sites (copyrights permitting or with permission) and include reports and publications, posters and sample forms. Ebrary intend to maintain the site by adding new information as it is published.

Health Information Resources

 

Formerly known as the National Library for Health, Health Information Resources is the gateway to online health care resources for all who work within or for the NHS. It offers access to the full text of much material which cannot be found in traditional literature databases, such as reports from Governments, charities, Royal Colleges and other professional organisations, guidelines and protocols, specially commissioned reviews, and clinical images. Most content is freely available without the need for username or password, but some requires an NHS Athens account (on application to an NHS Trust library).

Maternity and Infant Care

Maternity and Infant Care is the MIDIRS Database (part of the MIDIRS Online Service). It contains over 120,000 references with abstracts to journal articles from over 550 international English language journals, books, and grey literature relating to the midwifery profession, pregnancy, labour, birth, postnatal care, neonatal care, and the first year of an infant’s life. In addition to typical database searching facilities, over 400 ‘standard searches’ on key topics are available.

Aims to provide a comprehensive evidence base for everyone in health and social care. It includes a number of different types of information including primary research literature, practical implementation tools, guidelines and policy documents. NHS Evidence incorporates the former National Library for Health. Most content is freely available without the need for username or password, but some requires an NHS Athens account (on application to an NHS Trust library).

PubMed is a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine that includes over 18 million citations from Medline and other life science journals for biomedical articles back to 1948 with linking to fulltext articles within PubMed Central, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature.

Note: Medline is the largest component of PubMed and approximately 5,200 journals are currently indexed for Medline. A distinctive feature of MEDLINE is that the records are indexed with NLM's controlled vocabulary, the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).

Social Care Online

 

Social Care Online is the UK's most extensive database of social care information. It is produced by the Social Care Institute for Excellence, and includes research briefings, reports, government documents, journal articles, and websites. Some full text is available. The database is updated daily.

Social Theory

Social Theory contains over 145,000 pages of works by major social thinkers (e.g. Marx, Habermas, Hegel, Wollstonecraft, Durkheim, Foucault) as well as seminal texts from lesser known figures. The collection can be searched by keyword, browsed by author or title or searched using a thesaurus of sociological terms. Coverage is international and the collection includes original works and translations.

Stockley's Drug Interactions

Stockley's provides information on interactions between therapeutic drugs, proprietary medicines, herbal medicines, foods, drinks, pesticides and drugs of abuse. Each monograph typically contains a summary, and sections covering clinical evidence, mechanism, clinical importance, and management.

TRIP Database Plus

 

The TRIP Database (Turning Research Into Practice) is a single point of access to many sources of 'evidence-based' health information. For example, Medline, the Cochrane Library, Clinical Evidence, NICE Technology Appraisals and many others can all be searched simultaneously through TRIP. All links are to material freely available on the web, whether journal articles, reviews, guidelines, medical images etc. Words in the title and/ or text of a document can be searched. The database is updated monthly.

UK PubMed Central (UKPMC)

 

UKPMC is a free open-access online archive of over 280 full-text, peer-reviewed journals. All areas of the life sciences are covered, including biology, genetics, and human and veterinary medicine.

Citation databases in the subjects of Arts, Humanities, Sciences and Social Sciences.
These bibliographic databases allow searching for a specific article by subject, author, journal or author address. Because the information stored about each article includes the article's cited reference list (bibliography), it is also possible to search for articles that cite a known author or work.

WHO Reproductive Health Library

 

The RHL, begun in 1997, contains over 300 articles about evidence-based practice in reproductive health, arranged into six broad topics, together with editorials and additional resources such as videos. The topic areas are: reproductive tract infections, HIV/AIDS, pregnancy and childbirth, neonatal health, contraception and sterilisation, and gynaecology.
