Course planning & validation

Contents:

Introduction

The process of programme / course planning and validation is managed through well established University procedures. Part of the discussion that surrounds these events will focus on resources. Broadly, these are the points you will need to keep in mind when considering resource implications, compiling documentation including reading lists and completing the resource statements in the P2 form.

Early consultation with your Subject Librarian to discuss resource implications

Typically, a discussion with your Subject Librarian will cover:

  • how the planned programme fits in with existing programmes offered and therefore the likelihood of drawing upon existing resources to support new programmes / courses;
  • pressure on existing resources, especially print resources, that is likely to occur from more students using resources already in demand from current programmes;
  • electronic resources to support the programme;
  • costs of supporting new or expanded programmes. These will be higher where well-established collections are not already in place and will impact at each new level/year of the programme.
  • the implications of innovative forms of delivery.

Preparation of documents for Planning and Validation

This will include a P2 Resources statement signed by the F&R manager and Dean that Library resources are or will be in place to support new programmes. In addition you will require indicative reading lists to accompany Unit descriptions. Please discuss the resource lists with your Subject Librarian to ensure they meet your needs and exploit as wide a range of electronic resources as possible.

Validation events

These events often include a visit to The Sir Michael Cobham Library. Subject Librarians are happy to meet panels and give tours of the Library and Learning Centre. These visits do need to be booked in advance with your Subject Librarian however, experience has shown how useful a visit can be in providing an opportunity to answer concerns panel members may have about Library Resources before the main discussions. If resources have been highlighted as an issue then the Subject Librarian will be pleased to join the panel during the event to answer further questions.

Other Visits

There may be a number of circumstances in which guests to the University will want to tour The Sir Michael Cobham Library. The Library has well established procedures to manage visits, including a range of literature and guides especially written for guests, prospective students or staff. It is important, however, that the Library is informed in advance of visits in order to prepare appropriately.
