Dissertation preparation

Students starting dissertation research are expected to demonstrate greater independent use of Library resources using the information skills acquired at Levels C and I. We hope you may find it useful to make use of some of the following when discussing this aspect of dissertations with students:

  1. Encourage students to develop their skills in using information by exploring the help and guidance we have provided in our Academic Skills community which can be reached from the Library tab on myBU.
  2. Students will need to make more extensive use of the journal literature. They should have acknowledge of relevant bibliographic databases, and to search them effectively. Subject guides for students are located on the Library web pages.
  3. Students get access to the Inter library loans system for their dissertation, requests are normally checked and signed by dissertation supervisors before being submitted to the Library. This service is less significant with the growth in e-journal availability. For some subjects where e-journal availability is limited it is still important.
  4. Students can review copies of completed dissertations kept in the Library, as exemplars of good dissertations. (DEC, MS and ST dissertations are not deposited with the Library.)
  5. Students can book appointments with Subject Librarians for one to one consultations by telephoning +44 (0) 1202 965959 or by visiting the desks in either of our Libraries.
