Using the BU Library

You may wish to continue to access this Library's resources whilst you are away on placement, whether in the UK or overseas.

A number of electronic library services may be accessed if you are away from the Bournemouth University campus and have Internet access on a computer at home. Further details may be found on the pages How to Access E-Resources or contact your Subject Librarian/Subject Team for advice.

Our web pages provide access to:

The Library Catalogue

Subject Resources and Guides to relevant print and electronic resources;

A range of electronic databases and full text access to journals. In accordance with licence agreements these can only be used for research relating to course-work/dissertation and not for any project undertaken on behalf of your placement employer.

askBU, our Internet-based enquiry service, where you are able both to request subject advice and to look at answers to previously asked subject enquiries.

Borrowing and loan allowances.
As a placement student you may continue to borrow items provided that you can return them on time. The Library is unable to post books to you that you wish to borrow.

Photocopies of articles borrowed through the Inter-Library Loans service can be supplied and posted on request to any students embarking on research for their final year projects/dissertations.

For advice on accessing resources, or for help in planning your final year dissertation, please contact the appropriate Library Subject Team, or submit your query to askBU. Also, library and information skills sessions throughout your course, including mid-placement seminars, will be a source of useful advice.

Using other HE Libraries

As a placement student you may be able to borrow material from other Higher Education Libraries near your home or work - under the SCONUL access scheme. Contact your Subject Librarian/Subject Team for further information.

HE Libraries who are not members of the above scheme may still allow you reference access, and in come instances borrowing rights during their university vacations. Contact your Subject Librarian/Subject Team, who will help you identify other libraries that may be of use to you, including large urban public libraries or specialist libraries. They may also be able to arrange a letter or introduction for you (useful for visiting libraries outside the SCONUL Access scheme),

Many higher education libraries make their catalogues available on the Web.

Please note that access to other university libraries will normally exclude use of on-site computer-based information services.
