Public Libraries

Public libraries in the area surrounding the University and its Partners have resources that may help you with your studies, as well as offering recreational material.

Most public library catalogues are available on the web, so you can check what is available before you go.

At the larger public library, you may expect:

  • Good local information, including statistics.
  • Supplementary reading that may be relevant to your studies.
  • Leisure reading.
  • Multimedia and music in various formats, such as CDs, videos and DVDs. Expect to pay a hire charge.
  • Study space. Public libraries can be very busy at peak times, but may be a convenient alternative place for independent study during quieter times.
  • IT access through the People's Network. Expect to book to use a PC; time slots are often limited to one or two hours at a time.

You should not expect:

  • To be able to borrow from your public library without going through the proper registration process. Most public libraries require ID and two items of official correspondence as proof of address in their area.
  • Copies of your textbooks. These should be available through your university/partner library.
  • Free interlibrary loan services. Expect to pay if you want to order a book through the public library's interlibrary loan service, and anticipate delays in obtaining some materials - it can take weeks or months. Talk to university/partner library staff if you cannot find what you need, as they may be able to find it cheaply and more quickly.
  • To avoid paying fines. You are likely to have to pay fines if you return items late.
  • The same policies and procedures as your university/partner library. You must comply with policies of the host library.
