Borrowing - Hospital Library

While on placement in the hospital, you will have access to the books and journals in the Hospital Library . You may borrow up to 8 items (books and journals) at any one time from the Hospital Library and you may borrow books for 3 weeks and renew in person or by phone, or online provided nobody else is waiting for an item.

Whilst you will not be charged fines for overdue loans, you will receive reminder letters, and lost items must be paid for. Return all loans as soon as you can to allow other readers to use the books. When the Hospital Library is closed, books may be left in the secure book return bin outside the library door.

Please do not pass on material you have borrowed to someone else. You are responsible for it until it is returned to the library.

Please note - if you borrow your books directly from the University you are responsible for returning them to that Library. University Library books cannot be returned to the Hospital Library.

Getting Help

There is an Information Desk in the library where you can request help with using any aspect of the library service. You may also ring the library (internal ext. 4270) or send an e-mail to library@rbch.nhs.uk to receive help and advice. Information about library facilities can also be found on the Library site on the hospital's Intranet and on the Library Blog. You will also receive an induction from your hospital librarian.

Details of the books and journals in the hospital library can be found on the SWIMS catalogue. This catalogue covers NHS libraries in the South West region; look for the library's code: D02. Library staff can help with use of the catalogue. The Library Blog provides news about library services, links to relevant research, new resources and guides to using services.

It is important to attend your timetabled university IT and library sessions, as they are designed to give you the skills to carry out research for your assignments. To complement these sessions, you can arrange subject advice on a one-to-one basis at Bournemouth House Library through your Subject Support Library team.

Any enquiries concerning the resources on the Bournemouth University library web pages should be address to the HSC subject support library team. Alternatively, you can ring the Bournemouth University Library information line on (01202) 965959

NHS Athens account

As a Bournemouth University student on an NHS-related course, each year you will automatically be sent an email enabling you to register for an NHS Athens account.  This will allow you to access a collection of library e-resources purchased by the NHS, via the ‘Journals and Databases' section of NHS Evidence. If your activation code has expired or you have forgotten your username or password please contact mfoy@bournemouth.ac.uk.

If you have created an NHS Athens Account via your hospital library you should direct all Athens-related queries to that hospital library.

Hospital librarians will be pleased to assist with any queries you have regarding the NHS resources available.
