Library staff structure for supporting the academic schools
Academic support from the Library is provided by a team of Subject Librarians. Each member of the team has a specific responsibility to an academic school, department, subject area or groups of courses.

Role of the Subject Librarian
To ensure that, at a strategic level, channels for liaison are available and utilised both formally and informally between the School and the Library.
To manage and coordinate a team of professional librarians to ensure that they provide appropriate levels of subject support and advisory services to staff and students teaching, studying and researching within the School.
To plan and coordinate a programme of information skills teaching, within available resources.
Budgetary control and allocation.

Role of the Academic Support Librarian
To provide a day to day channel for liaison at an operational level between the Libraries and the course or subject areas they have responsibility for. This focuses upon the delivery of subject support and advisory services to staff, students and researchers.

How subject support is provided
Professional Library staff are involved in providing value-added services, such as:
- advice to lecturers on resource selection and acquisition;
- literature searching in both electronic databases and printed sources;
- helping students, staff and researchers with subject and project related enquiries.
These services are delivered via:
- Subject Advice desks in the Libraries staffed Monday to Friday, 10am – 4pm.
- Advertised subject advice times when staff will be available for 1:1 or small group consultation with staff and students in their offices.
- Online subject categorised resources e.g. subject advice guides (accessible on the myBU Library tab).
- Resource purchasing policies (including the purchase of books, journals and other materials).
- Communication with staff and students.
Our resource purchasing policies are based upon or informed by:
- course syllabi
- subject bibliographies
- suggestions from academic staff
- scanning scholarly and professional literature
- feedback from students
- feedback from Library issues desks concerning items in heavy demand
- inter-library loan requests
- publisher's publicity
Specific examples of how we communicate with staff and students include:
- attendance at School Committees;
- involvement with course teams;
- advice on case study materials;
- alerting to multimedia materials and off-air recordings;
- help with sources for assignments;
- conducting computer based literature searches;
- providing subject guidance to Internet sources.
