Borrowing - Hospital Library

As a current Bournemouth University HSC student, you may borrow up to 6 books from Thomas Sydenham Library. The normal loan period is 4 weeks, but may be one or two weeks for books in heavy demand.  You may renew in person, online or by phone, provided your book is not overdue, no one else has requested it and you have not renewed the same book excessively.  If your books become overdue you will be sent reminders and fines may be charged.  If the books are not returned you will be charged replacement costs plus administrative fees.

Please do not pass on material you have borrowed to someone else. You are responsible for it until it is returned to the library.

Finding Help

You will receive an induction from hospital library staff and may ask for assistance during staffed hours.

Library and IT sessions timetabled by Bournemouth University staff are important to attend, as they are designed to give you the skills to carry out research for your assignments. To complement these sessions, one-to-one Subject Advice appointments can be arranged with your University Subject Librarian when you visit the Bournemouth campus. Contact the HSC library subject support team in advance if you wish to make an appointment for a specific date/time.

In addition to the above you can get information and help from the Bournemouth University Library's web pages. Alternatively, you can ring Bournemouth University Library Enquiries on (01202) 965959.

NHS Athens account

As a Bournemouth University student on an NHS-related course, each year you will automatically be sent an email enabling you to register for an NHS Athens account. This will allow you to access a collection of library e-resources purchased by the NHS, via the ‘Journals and Databases' section of NHS Evidence. If your activation code has expired or you have forgotten your username or password please contact mfoy@bournemouth.ac.uk .

If you have created an NHS Athens Account via your hospital library you should direct all Athens-related queries to that hospital library.

Returning Bournemouth University Library books via Thomas Sydenham Library

If you are on placement at the Hospital and cannot get to a Bournemouth University Library to return your books, you can return them via Thomas Sydenham library. Please note: the Library cannot obtain books from the University for you, only return them.

All you have to do is:

1.  Take your books to the Library at West Dorset General Hospital.  Complete a form indicating when the books were returned. Library staff will date stamp the form and return it with the books to the University. Keep a record of the barcodes of the books you have returned.

2.  Telephone Bournemouth House Library on (01202) 967352, giving your ID number and the barcodes of the books to be returned.

Remember that:

  • Fines will not be charged if the date of your phone call and the date on the form from the Hospital Library are the same.

  • Fines will be charged on books already overdue when handed in at Thomas Sydenham Library.
  • You need to check the date the books were issued to, and ensure that they are returned or renewed by that date.
  • Ordinary loan books can be renewed twice, provided that they are not reserved and are not more than one day overdue.
  • One week loan books can be renewed once, provided that they are not reserved and are not more than one day overdue.
  • You are responsible for your books until discharged by Bournemouth University.

Book returns to Bournemouth University Library are subject to NHS courier networks and are not available from all NHS locations.

Bournemouth University Library - Inter Library Loans - journal articles

Final year pre-registration or post-registration students who are working on projects may also request articles found on other databases/sources.

Before making a request, check that the journal you require is not available in the Thomas Sydenham Library or via the University Library's A-Z list of e-journals. If it is not, fill out one Inter Library Loan form for each request and then have your tutor countersign it.

Inter Library Loan forms can be obtained from the hospital library staff, or, alternatively, if you cannot get to the hospital library, an online version of the request form is available from the inter library loans information page. It will need to be printed out, signed at section A and by your tutor and posted to the Bournemouth House Library, Christchurch Road, Bournemouth, BH1 3LH. If you require articles to be posted to you, make sure you include your full postal address.

Full information about Bournemouth University Inter Library Loans service can be found at http://www.bournemouth.ac.uk/library/using_the_library/ill.html
