Purbeck Film Festival 2009

film reel BU supports the 2009 Purbeck Film Festival during October as an official venue for a variety of films.

BU welcomes the return of the Purbeck Film Festival to its Talbot Campus for a season of films to inform and entertain.

The Purbeck Film Festival is the biggest and longest running rural film festival in the UK. This year, the festival runs from Friday, 16 October to Saturday, 31 October featuring over 80 films shown at venues throughout the county of Dorset.

Films to be screened at BU include:

Tuesday, 20 October – Waltz with Bashir (12A)
7.30 pm, Allsebrook Lecture Theatre, Talbot Campus

The first animated film to be nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards and winner of a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film 2009, this animated documentary follows the Director, Ari Folman, meeting and interviewing old friends in the hope of unblocking past memories of his former life in the Israeli army during the first Lebanon War.

Thursday, 22 October – Man on Wire (12)
7.30 pm, Allsebrook Lecture Theatre, Talbot Campus

This incredible documentary by James Marsh mixes documentary footage with reconstructions and narrative from wire walker Philippe Petit who, with the help of two friends, walked between the World Trade Centre towers eight times in 1974, nearly 1,400 feet above the ground.

Tuesday, 27 October – Couscous (15)
7.30 pm, Allsebrook Lecture Theatre, Talbot Campus

This modern family drama based in France follows a redundant 60 year-old North African shipyard worker who decides against all odds to open up a fish restaurant on a boat. This critically acclaimed film has won numerous awards including 4 Cesars and Best Film at the Critics Awards in 2008.

Thursday, 29 October – The Class (12A)
7.30 pm, Allsebrook Lecture Theatre, Talbot Campus

An inner city High School in multi-cultural Paris sets the scene for this vibrant and poignant film. The Director, Laurent Cantet shot multiple improvised takes of real students and a real teacher to create this remarkable film through a school year. This film won Golden Palm at Cannes in 2008 and was nominated for best foreign language film of the year at the 2009 Oscars.

Further information: All screenings are scheduled for 7.30 pm. Tickets are £2.50 for students and £5.00 for members of the general public with a complimentary glass of wine for over 18s.
