Students to Show off their Innovative Designs at Festival

27 March 2007

Student demonstrates prototype at last year's Festival BU will be celebrating its 15th annual Festival of Design and Innovation in June.

The Festival of Design and Innovation is where education meets the commercial market and provides a showcase for design and innovation talent, education and support in the region.

More than 170 new design and prototypes with commercial potential, as well as commercialised designs from previous years, will be on public display for the first time.

Mandy Haberman, inventor of the Anyway Up Cup has been invited to open the Festival this year.

The non drip container is sealed between sips and is widely used as a medical tool used for a variety of feeding difficulties.

Mandy, an Honorary Fellow of BU also received an Honorary Doctorate in 2005 and has won a variety of awards for her unique design, including the DBA Design Effectiveness Award for innovation and product design.

Mandy also received an award from The British Plastics Federation Award for innovative use of plastics and won the most innovative product in the Tommy Awards for two consecutive years, voted for by parents.

This unique event brings together public and private supporters to champion and assist innovation, commercialisation and business growth in the South West.

Three projects from recent BU design shows that, with business development support from BU for two of them (Loftlift and Quickpitch) achieved commercial status include:

  • The Biologic ZorinPump – sold by graduate Phil Robinson to Dahon California Incorporate, the world’s largest producer of folding bicycles.
  • The Loftlift – in development with experts Stira, based on a design by graduate Dan Quare.
  • The Quick Pitch – a pop-up tent designed by graduate Franziska Conrad and manufactured under exclusive licence by Gelert, one of the UK’s most popular camping brands.
