Ball to Get Festival Rolling

 

Festival of Design & Innovation 2006 Legendary TV presenter Johnny Ball will formally open Bournemouth University's ‘Festival of Design & Innovation 2006'

Bournemouth University's ‘Festival of Design & Innovation 2006', springs to life on Thursday, 29th June with a preview of an event that promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

This special evening features the legendary TV presenter Johnny Ball, Britain 's best known ‘populariser' of science and mathematics who will formally open the Festival.

The three-day event then runs between Friday, June 30th to Monday, July 3rd (the Festival is closed on Sunday, July 2nd ) and represents an excellent opportunity for visitors to engage directly with the entrepreneurs of tomorrow. The Festival features the first public display of over 150 new designs with potential for commercial applications across a range of industries including automotive, household, health, engineering, sport and leisure and environmental.

In fact, three projects from recent Bournemouth design shows have achieved commercial status with business development support from the University. These include:

The BioLogic Zorin Pump – sold by graduate Phil Robinson to Dahon California Incorporate, the world’s largest producer of folding bicycles;

The LoftLift – currently in development with Irish-based loft ladder experts Stira based on a design by graduate, Dan Quare;

The Quick Pitch - pop-up tent designed by graduate, Franziska Conrad and manufactured under exclusive license by Gelert, one of the UK’s favourite camping brands.


The Bournemouth University Festival of Design & Innovation runs from Thursday, 29th June to Monday, 3rd July (closed on Sunday, 2nd July) on the Talbot Campus. Admission is free and further information is available on online at www.bournemouth.ac.uk/festival

The Festival is generously supported by a number of organisations including Dorset Business, Business Link Wessex , the Institute of Directors, Aimhigher, Sunseeker Plc, Southwest Regional Development Agency, Hamworthy Plc, DEK Printing and Avonwood Developments Ltd.
