Saving money and cooking

In the evening (5pm - 6:30pm): Meet other students at our Global Café

Our Global Café takes place every Wednesday during term-time and is a great place to meet other international students, chat and relax. There’s free tea, coffee and biscuits, come along for 15 minutes or stay for an hour… it’s up to you. Join us after the Orientation Day in the 5th floor of the Student Centre at Talbot Campus to meet other students and discuss what you learnt during the day.

More information about the optional workshops

There are four workshops for you to choose from and each session will run twice. (You need to choose three workshops, according to what is most useful for you).

Careers support, part-time job opportunities and skills development at BU
Find out about the many ways in which the Careers team can support you. You’ll get tips about how to search for a part-time job and information about National Insurance and immigration restrictions related to your Student Visa. Plus, we’ll tell you about other careers-related workshops, services and activities that you can access later in the term if you need to.

Saving money and cooking on a budget
We will provide you with a list of places where you can get your groceries, different local supermarkets, and the range of prices that you can find. As cooking is always a good way to save money, we will give you some examples of simple recipes that you can make and how to store them. You will also learn how to plan your daily meals, making sure that you get all the nutrients and supplements that your body needs.

Culture shock and British culture
Moving to a new country is exciting, but not always easy. Join us for some interesting discussions about British culture and how it may differ from what you expect and what you’re used to at home. You’ll have chance to share your observations and ask questions.

Accommodation tips and advice
Finding somewhere to live can be challenging. Although BU can’t find private accommodation for you, this session will help you to understand your options and gain valuable tips about how to navigate the UK lettings system, avoid scams and make sure any potential accommodation is safe and provided at the right standards.
