Who are we?What is a chaplain?A chaplaincy is a title for what is, in effect, the chaplain’s department. A chaplain is a minister of religion who works in an institution, in this case a university. The word ‘chaplain’ goes back centuries and refers to a Latin word ‘cappella’, which means ‘cloak’. The story is told about St. Martin of Tours, a compassionate fourth century soldier, who encountered a shivering beggar on a cold winter’s night. Having no money in his purse, this soldier took off his cloak and slashed it with his sword to give half of it to the beggar. This cloak became a symbol of care and now represents the role of a chaplain. The role of the ChaplainThe chaplain is a part of the student services and provides the following support:
Types of ChaplainsAt BU we have one full-time university chaplain who co-ordinates the chaplaincy, two associate chaplains who work part-time, an international chaplain who works closely with the international students and a number of visiting chaplains who respond as requested. Between us we cover all the major religions, and are happy to care for individuals whatever their background or beliefs. Choose an option for more information: |
