Undertaking a research degree can be very costly and obtaining funding to study at this level is highly competitive. You should consider how to fund your research as early as possible and include details in your application. You need to ensure you are able to support yourself for the duration of your study and may, if appropriate, consider seeking a number of different sources. Research CouncilsThe Research Councils fund world-class fundamental research, ranging from the most basic, blue skies investigator-led research, through longer-term strategic research, observation and survey, to more applied research activities. Industrial SponsorshipIf you work in industry, your employer may give you paid leave for study, or pay for all or part of your tuition fees and other costs such as examination fees and books. This is only likely, however, if the course is directly relevant to your work. Industry and commercial companies also contribute to the CASE studentships (Co-operative Awards in Science and Engineering) offered by a number of the Research Councils.
