What is the JANET Access Grid?

"Access Grid (AG) in simple terms is an advanced videoconferencing application that uses audio and video tools allowing people in different locations worldwide to meet in a virtual venue (virtual meeting room). In these virtual venues participants can see and speak to each other in realtime, use online chat and share applications simultaneously. As an application AG is ideal for any size of meeting due to its scalability. At its most basic it can run on a laptop with webcam using the laptop's display and webcam microphone for a one-to-one meeting or it can be used in a conference room with a server, several high specification cameras and large display boards to create a group-to-group meeting with participants from across the globe." AGSC website

Access Grid systems are in use accross the world, originally being developed at Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago. The Access Grid in the UK is managed by JANET(uk) and is hosted and supported by the AGSC (Access Grid Support Centre) from the University of Manchester.

Who can use the Access Grid?

The Access Grid is available for use by any staff member or student at Bournemouth University. A desktop system is setup on a PC in the Graduate School, PG63, Talbot Campus.

How do I use it?

If you wish to have an online meeting with someone you need to make sure they also have the use of an Access Grid Node. Once this has been comfirmed then either you or the other person need to book a Vitual Venue for the meeting. At this point please contact Dr Fiona Knight or Richard Sandiford in the Graduate School to arrange access to the computer to book the Venue and for the meeting itself.
