Instructional Classes 2009 - 2010

Tae Kwon Do Class

Our instructional class programme continues to grow year on year, and we encourage you to take part and learn new skills through fun, energetic and fitness-based activities.

These classes are ideal if you want to learn a new sport or activity, or to develop a new skill. All equipment is provided.

Early booking is recommended.

Information about our instructional classes

  • Open to all (from 16 years upwards)
  • Suitable for all fitness levels
  • Fun and enjoyable
  • Require absolutely no previous experience
  • Provided by highly qualified and motivated instructors
  • All kit needed is provided
  • Bring water and a towel to all classes
  • Please arrive on time for your class. Admission will be refused If you are more than ten minutes late for a class
  • Please wear comfy clothing and trainers to all classes, instructors will advise on any specific clothing requirements
  • To book any course please come to sportBU reception to pick up a booking form
  • Courses are booked on a first come, first served basis and payment is required at the time of booking
  • No refunds can be given for cancellations notified within 7 days prior to the commencement of the course unless accompanied by medical certification
  • No refunds will be considered once the course has started. Please make sure that the course is suitable
  • Courses will be cancelled if there are insufficient numbers, and a full refund will be given in this case.
  • Please note that Summer term courses are for 5 weeks and prices will be reduced for these courses on a pro rata basis.

Aikido

Aikido is a modern martial art developed in the last century by Morihei Ueshiba, known as O-Sensei (Great Teacher).

It's the result of his intensive study into the sword, stick and body arts of Japan.

Aikido is a non-competitive martial art which originated in Japan. It is based upon principles of blending and non-conflict.

Benefits of training in Aikido can include improvement in fitness, flexibility and confidence.

Badminton Beginners

Dates: 1 course available:
3 February – 31 March 10
Day: Wednesdays
Times: 6.00 – 6.55pm

The beginner’s class will focus on learning the rules, basic hitting actions and skills starting with the serve and then moving onto the overhead shots needed to play the game effectively.

Both courses will be broken down into 20mins of coaching and 40mins of game play.

Badminton Improvers

Dates: 1 course available:
3 February – 31 March 10
Day: Wednesdays
Times: 7.00 – 7.55pm

The improver’s class will aim to develop the techniques covered in the beginner's class and incorporate a tactical element.

Both courses will be broken down into 20mins of coaching and 40mins of game play.

Learn the basics, including top rock, freezes, 3 Step, 6 Step, CCs, Bronco and Cobblers Wheel.

This class will be a challenge for all. No experience necessary, just energy and perseverance.

Then you will really be equipped to impress everyone on the dancefloor!

Led by Bournemouth based commercial dance company Pure Funk.

Capoeira

Capoeira is an art form which can be described in many ways. It encompasses Afro-Brazilian culture, art, music, language, and movement into one cohesive whole.

The result is beautiful yet dangerous, smooth yet powerful.

At its purest level, Capoeira simply becomes a conversation between two bodies in motion, and at this level it truly becomes a sight to behold.

The music controls the focus of the game, and from the music flow the movements of Capoeira.

Comercial Street Dance

Dates: 2 separate courses available:

Nine week instructional course for beginners and those new to street/MTV/commercial dance styles.

Learn popular techniques and build up the pace over the nine weeks, preparing you for the weekly drop in class after the course has been completed.

Techniques will include floorwork, glides, waves, lockin' amoungst others. Suitable for males and females who want to strut their funky stuff!

Cuban Salsa

Progressive Rueda de Casino Cuban Salsa class is suitable for Absolute beginners and above, this style of Salsa originated in the 1950’s Havana Cuba, it is danced in a circle with two or more couples exchanging partners when the caller changes the moves, its fun, fast moving and probably the best and most enjoyable way to learn Salsa.

The course will cover most of the basic Rueda de Casino Cuban Salsa moves and will provide you with the confidence to dance and enjoy the passion of salsa.

Fencing

Dates: 2 separate courses available:

This course is great for anyone completely new to fencing. It focuses on the basics of the art of fencing, from the correct stance through to a variety of attacks and defensive options.

Another aim is to introduce competitive electric foil fencing.

The second terms course is designed to take you that next step further and works on improving your proficiency with the foil, whilst introducing the other two weapons used within the sport (the epee and the sabre).

All the appropriate equipment is provided; all you need is a pair of trainers and some track suit trousers or similar loose fitting long trousers. No jeans or shorts though please.

Karate

The course is fundamentally Shotokan Karate however we cross-train, so many elements of martial arts are included (striking, kicking, throwing and grappling).

The training covers technique, pad work, forms and street self defence. This is also supplemented with weapons training/defence.

Karate will help to develop awareness, confidence, power, speed and coordination.

There is also an opportunity to grade to the first belt at the end of the course.

LA Salsa

PolzApart are running Pole Dancing classes designed for complete beginners. The emphasis is on fun and fitness, no thongs required although a sense of humour is essential!

These classes are for all ages and sizes regardless of fitness level.

Each week you will be taught climbs and spins that use the body's core muscles. As the weeks progress, strength, stamina and flexibility is increased, enabling the moves to become more achievable and controlled.

This is a ladies only class. All you need is a pair of shorts and trainers.

Qi Gong & Meditation *New Day 09/10*

Classes begin with a short meditation to calm the body and mind. The main body of the hour is spent practicing Da Bei Qi Gong. A soft Qi Gong practice from china, its roots from Tibetan Budhism.

Comprising of static postures, held whilst either cross legged, seated or standing, the practice helps to generate internal Qi (life force energy) strengthen the sinews, improve core strength and calm the mind.

Traditional Chen Style Tai Chi classes help to develop fitness, flexibility and well being; improve core strength, internal balance and calm the mind.

Skills learnt can not only be used for self defence but also, and most importantly, to help bring focus in life.

Practise brings awareness and clarity to the practitioner

Tennis

The tennis sessions are aimed at anyone from beginner to good club player. The sessions will be split into two parts.

The first half hour will provide coaching on a full court to develop racket/court/ball familiarity, developing groundstrokes introducing the use of spin and slice, and other skills such as serving and volleying.

The course will build up competitive drills and include tactical play such as the serve and volley, singles and doubles matchplay.

The second half hour of each session will allow participants to play matches.

Traditional Chinese Shaolin Boxing

The course teaches Open-Hand Forms, two person sparring, applications and methods, and includes teaching Five Ancestor / Wuzuquan Kung Fu.

The course is taught by Master Alan Tinnion, a fully accredited international authority on traditional Shaolin Kung Fu, and Inner Chamber Disciple of the legendary Grandmaster Chee Kim Thong who was declared in his lifetime a ‘Living National Treasure of the Peoples Republic of China’.

Qi-Gong can also be used as a form of rehabilitation and stress release.

The course instructor is Dr Alan Tinnion, Professor of traditional Chinese Internal and External martial and therapeutic arts, and Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Advanced), Shanghai University, China. Graduate of Shanghai University of TCM and practitioner in the Shanghai No. 1 Peoples Hospital.

Wing Chun is an aggressive no-nonsense self defence system that employs compact and economical attack and defence methods.

Suitable for both men and women, it teaches students to be elusive and totally unpredictable. As they don’t ‘think’ about the attacks, the system creates reflexes that go with the ‘best’ way of attack and defence.

The Wing Chun we teach is of Fong lineage, an aggressive style that uses compact and economical attack and defence methods that make it an excellent form of self defence. It operates at very close range, making it difficult for opponents to deal with.

These classes are designed for beginners, and will cover forms, stance, punching, kicking, conditioning and chi sau (wing chun sparing), as well as some fitness.
