Staff Development Policy

Updated September 2009

1. PRINCIPLES

The University recognises that staff are its key resource and is seeking to establish itself as an employer of choice by recruiting and retaining excellent staff.

The expertise, skills and commitment of staff will enable the University to achieve its objectives. Staff development is therefore crucial to the University in helping to meet its strategic and operational standards and in adding value by raising individual and organisational performance levels. The University also recognises the potential of individual members of staff and aims to provide opportunities for staff to develop personally as well as professionally, which in turn can enhance job satisfaction.

For these reasons the University is committed to supporting staff development and to investment in those activities which underpin the achievement of the Corporate and Strategic Plans Plans

The aim of staff development is to ensure that both individuals and the University improve their performance and contribution by providing the environment, direction and opportunity for individuals to develop within the context of organisational priorities. Section 8.1 of the Strategic Plan and the Staff Development Priorities for the current year outline the ways in which individual and institutional performance are linked and the ways in which staff development contributes to organisational development.

At BU staff development is seen as having eight main purposes:

  1. To add value by achieving corporate improvement through individual improvement
  2. To support staff in developing and achieving their personal and professional development plans
  3. To support staff in developing job related knowledge, skills and behaviours that are critical to their role or function
  4. To support staff in the use of business critical processes and systems
  5. To support staff in developing their personal and professional potential
  6. To encourage cross-institutional working and collaboration
  7. To ensure compliance with regulations and statutory requirements
  8. To facilitate the process of change by engaging staff in dialogue on relevant issues
