IntroductionThe current challenging times may be affecting many of us personally; it may be causing us concern for managing the present, our own careers and futures and associated financial security. We can either just hope things will get better, or perhaps instead take more positive personal action to secure our future. Are you responsible for making things happen, whether in your studies, at work or at home? You may be in a career or just about to start one – and things aren’t going quite as you hoped. Have you ever thought about how you could raise your own performance, but believe it’s impossible because you already feel to be working as hard as you can? As a student, a future employee or manager, or current professional, do you sometimes feel that your organisation could do much better, but find it’s difficult to get more out of your work colleagues than you can at the moment? These are examples of The Leadership Challenge that all managers and organisations face - we believe we can help you to tackle this challenge. Aim & Learning Outcomes for the dayThe aim of the Leadership Challenge Workshop is to help delegates raise performance in order to achieve their personal and work goals. The planned outcomes of the Workshop are: Develop a Winning Attitude. A winning attitude is essential for you to overcome the many difficulties and challenges you may face. Why is it that some people give up at the first hurdle, while others find the courage and determination to succeed – whatever the obstacles? You will learn some simple and highly effective techniques to help develop a winning attitude for yourself and those you may lead. Most of them are common sense, but surprisingly not common practice. You will hear from personal experience how these techniques worked in one of the most challenging situations imaginable. Problem-solving and Decision-making. We all have difficulty solving problems and making the right decisions in our increasingly complex and pressured jobs. You will already know that experience can be a help in solving problems, but can also be a hindrance in new and increasingly complex situations. We will carry out some lateral thinking & perceptual shift exercises to look at some of the blockers to innovation, and demonstrate the need occasionally to change mindset in problem-solving. You will be shown and have the opportunity to practise a six-stage decision-making tool used extensively by the British Army - so from now on you will have more tools to tackle the problems you face. Flexible Leadership Styles. The leader of today needs to have a flexible range of leadership styles to suit the situation they are in. Within the limitation of the course time constraint, we will remind delegates of the need to develop their own style of leadership to suit their personality, the needs of the people they are leading, the differing situations they might find themselves in, and the needs of their organisation. Learn the Eight Qualities of Credible Leaders and discover what sort of leader you need to be. Developing a Shared Vision. Potentially successful leaders tend to have a picture in their mind of their preferred future - what makes them successful is the ability to make this picture or vision a reality. We will help delegates develop a vision, and show them how to make it more likely to happen – to bring about successful change and improvements at work. Communication & Presentation Skills. Successful leaders tend to have enhanced communication and powerful presentation skills. We will look at some of the principal tools used by successful communicators, and show delegates how to make their own presentations more powerful and successful – whether it’s pitching for business, briefing your senior management team, or telling a story to friends in a pub. These would be skills worth having, would they not? Importance of High Performance Teams. The day will demonstrate the potential ease with which high performance teams can be built rapidly. Rather than just talking about the Theory of Teams, delegates will experience what it is really like to be in a high performance team. They may feel the disappointment and failure of a low performing team early in the day, and the excitement, buzz and success of a high performing team by the end of it. Delegate’s will have increased confidence to transfer this learning back to their own teams. The PresenterPresenter The Workshop will be led by Peter Kennedy from The Leadership Challenge, who has a military background - primarily with the Parachute Regiment. He enlisted as a private soldier, and by the age of 29 was one of the youngest Majors in the British Army. He worked alongside the civil police in counter-insurgency operations and exercises in Northern Ireland, and the UK mainland. Saw action with 2 PARA in the Falklands War, and personally led the final assault at the Battle of Goose Green. After taking an MBA to convert his military knowledge to the commercial world, he now runs leadership, powerful presentation, and other development programmes for a wide-ranging group of organisations to help raise business & operational performance. His diverse list of clients includes: Siemens, the Scottish Police College, several police forces in England and Wales, Aggregate Industries, Finning (UK), the OU Business School, and a number of SMEs.
