Development for Professional and Support Staff

<< Back

The recently revised Staff Performance Appraisal Scheme now includes a Personal and Professional Development Plan. As a result staff have been asking for some tools to help them think about their longer term development and to facilitate conversations around individual development needs and solutions.

Staff Development are leading on a project to work with professional and support staff to develop some tools that will help them to reflect on their personal and professional development and to identify development solutions and are being supported on this project by Tracy Hixson, Academic Administration Manager in the Media School.

Behavioural and Technical Skills Framework

The first step of this project is to develop technical and behavioural skills frameworks for Professional and Support Staff (P&SS) across the institution.

The behavioural and technical skills frameworks will provide us with a number of opportunities which include:

  • Aligning P&SS expectations and aspirations with the refreshed BU vision, values and strategy arising from staff conversations
  • Integrating with appraisal, personal and professional development planning and person specifications;
  • Underpinning and informing future development opportunities for professional and support staff
  • Supporting the organisation in developing flexible professional and support staff
  • Enhancing individual skills so that staff are better positioned to apply for future opportunities around the organisation to develop theselves and their career
  • Building on good practice at BU and established frameworks such as the AUA professional behaviours framework and those used at other HEIs

The AUA Professional Behaviours Framework was launched as a pilot in the last appraisal round to support personal and professional development planning and the career and development aspirations of professional and support staff.

The AUA framework was designed to highlight behaviour patterns that distinguish effective performance in HE professional and support roles.

BU will be reviewing the AUA framework in conjunction with other models used across the sector and seeking feedback from a wide range of staff with a view to developing a BU technical and behavioural skills framework that can be used as a useful appraisal tool.
