The Probation Process at BU

BU’s probationary process is designed to provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate that you are able to do the job to which you have been appointed, and apply your knowledge and skills effectively. It is a period during which expectations will be explained and support provided as required

Line managers have the responsibility to provide you with the means and opportunity to demonstrate your ability. This should involve outlining expectations, giving clear instruction, regular constructive feedback and the provision of appropriate development. At the end of the period, your line manager will also need to make an informed decision whether or not to confirm your continued employment

Academic Staff

The probationary period for academic staff usually lasts 12 months, with two formal reviews taking place at 6 and 12 months

Professional and Support Staff

The probationary period for professional and support staff usually lasts 6 months, with two formal reviews taking place at 12 and 20 weeks

Research Staff

The probationary period for research staff usually lasts 6 months, with two formal reviews taking place at 12 and 20 weeks
