Preventing Bike Theft on Campus

Reporting security incidents

Bike theft has historically been the biggest security issue experienced on campus. As a result there are a number of measures in place to help you protect your cycle. If your cycle is valuable please take out relevant insurance cover. Safety in cycling is also of prime importance to ensuring a happy, healthy and efficient mode of travel.

Cycle Compounds

There are secure facilities at both campuses for you to store your bike. These facilities are accessed via the use of a special card entry system. Entry cards can be obtained from the Students' Union office for a deposit of £5. Please use the secure cycle compounds in order to best protect your bike; however this does not negate the need to have a good quality lock.

Cycle Locks and Lights

The BU Travel Plan Group have subsidised some high quality bicycle D locks and lights and these can be bought from the Students' Union shop at greatly reduced prices. You should ensure that you always use lights when cycling at night. Cycling without lights after dark is unsafe and could lead to a fixed penalty notice being issued to you by the Police.

Bournemouth University Bicycles Users Group (BUBUG)

Bournemouth University Bicycle User (BUBUG) provides useful hints and tips on bicycle security and personal safety whilst cycling. Membership of BUBUG is free to all students and staff of BU. As Chair of BUBUG Martin Handford represents BU on the Bournemouth Cycling Forum and campaigns for more cycling facilities throughout the Bournemouth/Poole/Christchurch conurbation. All members of BUBUG automatically become members of the Dorset Cyclists Network (DCN) and are able to get discounts at many cycle shops throughout the area.

Cycles Lanes and Safety

The university has campaigned successfully for a cycle path between the two campuses and this is now in place along the Lansdowne Road, Wimborne Road and Talbot Avenue. There are many other cycle paths around the conurbation and many quiet roads suitable for cycling which often run parallel to main roads. A cycle map of the conurbation showing cycle paths can be obtained free from receptions in Poole House, Bournemouth House and the Executive Business Centre, Students' Union shops or from Martin Handford.

The University has also produced a video on cycling safely. You can get the DVD from Martin Handford by sending an email to mhandford@bournemouth.ac.uk
