Welcome to the Bournemouth University Bike Users Group or BUBUG!

Set up in 2004 we work hard to support cyclists at BU, whether for commuting, heath or leisure. Our main aims are;

  • To work with the University to improve cycling facilities across the University
  • To work with local councils and  partners across the area to create an safe and secure cycling environment for staff and students
  • To represent it’s members within University forums, such as the Travel Plan Group, and externally, such as the Bournemouth Cycling Forum on all cycling related issues
  • To arrange discounts with local shops and providers
  • To promote cycling within the University and to act as a link with the Bournemouth cycling community
  • To organise and support cycling-related events

Why cycle

Dorset is one of the most beautiful areas for cycling with many local groups running social rides, charity cycle rides and competitive races so it’s a great way to meet people and explore your local area.

Take a look at our links to find out more.

Give Cycling a Go

It’s also a great way to get around. In a number of races it has been shown to be quicker to cycle than drive through many towns, especially in peak traffic times.

Regular cycling is also a great way to stay fit and healthy, lose weight and reduce long term risks of illnesses such as heart disease. It has also been shown to improve mental well-being and energy levels.

Facilities

BU has a number of covered, secure cycle lock –ups and a further large quantity of free-standing cycle lock ups across the two campuses and at most blocks of student residences. There are also showers and lockers so that you get refreshed after your ride; click here to see the campus maps with a full list of our facilities.

Cyclists can buy high quality D locks and front and rear bike lights at greatly reduced prices from the Students Union shops. Through out the year there are regular bike doctor sessions and a number of free training sessions from a CYTEC qualified mechanic on basic bike maintenance. Free maps of the area showing cycle paths are available too (click here for electronic versions of these maps).

BUBUG Membership

This is free to all BU students and staff. As a member you will receive a free Hi Vis waistcoat and free membership of Dorset Cyclists Network. This will enable members to get discounts at many of the bike shops across Dorset.

If you're interested in becoming a member of BUBUG, or simply want to get some advice about cycling in the local area either contact us, or take a look at the useful information and links in this site.
