External examinersExternal examiners play a leading role in assuring the University's academic standards and programme quality. They have a particular responsibility for ensuring that the assessment processes are sound and fairly operated and that the academic standards of the University's awards are appropriately set and maintained. External examiners from the HE sector are able to compare the performance of students with that of their peers on similar programmes/frameworks elsewhere in the higher education sector in order to maintain nationally comparable standards. External examiners provide annual reports to the University. The purpose of the external examiner's report is to help the University to judge whether the programme is meeting its objectives and maintaining the standard of the award to which it leads. These reports are central and integral elements of institutional processes for the monitoring and review of programmes/frameworks. External examiners are requested to use the University's standard report form available below. All external examiners are expected to attend a briefing seminar to introduce them to University processes and regulations. The University normally holds two briefing events a year. For further information on external examining, assessment practice and assessment regulations, please see the Academic Procedures. |
