Learning and Teaching Fellow 2006/2007
I joined the University in 1999 as Language Learning Resources Officer and worked in The Language Centre as part of the International Communication team. Before this I had worked for 15 years as a senior teacher in a local language college and I had also both studied and worked in Sweden . Living in Sweden was an experience I found extremely valuable because it provided me with first hand experience of the challenges and rewards involved in having to adapt to another culture and language. Since starting at Bournemouth University my role has developed and I now lecture in English for Academic Purposes as well as run The Language Centre. This has given me a much greater insight into the challenges international students face when adapting to the requirements of UK higher education. In turn this has encouraged me to acquire, adapt and produce materials in The Language Centre which can help international students improve their English language skills as well as their study skills. In the summer of 2005 The Language Centre moved to its new home in the Sir Michael Cobham Library and at the same time changed from being an analogue system to a digital one. This meant investing in new technologies such as our new Melissi digital classroom as well as digitising a large amount of materials which had previously only been available in analogue format. This move and change has been very successful according to initial student feedback with many commenting on how user friendly the systems in the new centre are. My aims with the fellowship are to look at ways of using the centre's facilities to help our international students integrate more fully into life at the University by involving them more with British students with interests in language and culture. At the same time I feel very strongly that we should build on the mix of International and national students at this university to encourage our British students to develop greater cultural awareness. I am also working with the learning technologists to investigate using podcasts in language learning as well as looking at ways of integrating our Melissi digital classroom into the new VLE. Objectives of FellowshipThroughout the fellowship period I would like to evaluate the use of technology in language learning generally. Look at the impact it has on learning and consider the differences between languages and other disciplines in terms of success when technology is used. Also investigate which technologies work best for language learning
