Project Description
Project planPDP4Life will take an existing specification for an Individual Learner Record that currently records formal qualifications, developed by the SHELL project, and extend it to accept learner-generated records of informal learning from local PDP systems. SHELL is a JISC-funded project in the MLEs for Lifelong Learning programme led by the University of Plymouth that is coming to an end in 2005. It has successfully developed a specification framework for learner records and has pioneered the use of IoNode technology to transfer learner records securely from one study location to another. PDP4Life will further test the use of IoNode in different locations. OutcomesIn addition to mapping their PDP systems against the specification developed by the project, the partners will share information about their institutional PDP systems and discuss approaches to the PDP process. They will also have the opportunity to review other IMS LIP/UK LeaP compatible e-PDP and e-Portfolio systems that have been developed by the JISC community and pilot appropriate tools if feasible within the timescale of the project. Two processes for transferring student records between institutions, one using IoNode technology and one using a Virtual Private Network (VPN), will be evaluated for ease of use, accuracy and security. Support for Lifelong Learning NetworksBy developing and testing systems for transferring and merging learner records, the longer term goal is to enable HE and FE partners to support progression though the different stages of education, including recording learning that takes place at work or in locations other than in formal educational settings. In this way, it will support the activities of the Lifelong Learning Networks. Focus on the Creative IndustriesOne group of learners that the project focuses on in particular are those studying creative subjects or working in the creative industries. The challenges associated with recording and retaining artefacts related to their learning achievements, such as design, fashion and photographic artefacts, or film, TV and drama outputs, are considerable. Employers' organisations and the ADM HEA Subject Centre will also be contributing to the work of the project in this area. JISC ProgrammePDP4Life is a regional e-learning project funded by JISC as part of its Distributed E-learning Programme. It runs for 12 months, beginning on March 1st 2005 and ending 31st March 2006. |
