Research and education

Links between education and discipline-based research are at the core of the distinctive nature of higher education. Developing these links in order to advance student learning may be done in a number of ways through the curriculum, for example:

  • subject content may be based directly on staff research interests;
  • emphasis may be placed on the processes through which knowledge is produced in the discipline and on the development of a research ethos and students' research skills;
  • teaching is approached through inquiry-based activities that engage students and staff in joint investigations;
  • teaching approaches are informed by systematic inquiry into teaching and learning processes.

The Higher Education Academy has a section on resources linking teaching and discipline-based research including the 2009 publication by Alan Jenkins and Mick Healey that develops the idea of students becoming stakeholders in a research community through their engagement with research and inquiry in collaboration with lecturers.

A series of Masterclasses by staff from across the six academic Schools in 2008/09 demonstrate how BU staff have used their research to both inform their teaching and engage their students in research.
