Health and Safety

The Health and Safety Team is responsible for advising on all matters relating to Health & Safety with in the University.

If you want to contact them, please send an email to Health & Safety Team or if you have any safety ideas or suggestions you can send an email to Safety Ideas for consideration.

Health & Safety Policy

The BU Health & Safety policy is accessible via the Health & Safety Intramap and specific guidance, policy and procedural information can be found under the ‘arrangements’ section.

Fire Precautions

All members of staff have an absolute duty to follow all fire instructions/procedures, and fully participate in any evacuation. Should you discover a fire, activate the nearest fire alarm, and evacuate the building using the nearest available exit. Full details of the University's Fire Procedures and responsibilities can be found on the Health & Safety Intramap .

Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPS)

If you think that you would require assistance (e.g. through a medical condition or limited mobility - either temporary or permanent) in the event of an emergency evacuation, please contact your line manager and/or the Fire Officer located in EIS.

No Smoking Policy

No smoking is permitted in, or within 5 metres of any university building. Also in-line with national regulations there is also to be no smoking within any enclosed public space within university grounds.

First Aid

First Aiders are located throughout the University. Names and locations are accessible from the Health & Safety Intramap. Reception staff also have up to date lists of names, and in an emergency you can also dial 222 from anywhere within the University. If you become aware of any inaccuracies in this list please inform the Estates First Aid Coordinator.

Accident Reporting System

Accidents, incidents and ‘near misses’ must be reported to the Health & Safety Team as these are monitored internally and externally. If you are involved in an incident, firstly make sure your line manager knows about it - then complete the Accident Form, which is available on the Health & Safety Intramap.

Emergencies/Serious Incidents

In the event of fire, accident or other serious incident, you should report the incident immediately (where safe to do so, or as soon as you are able) by phoning 222 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week). Do not call the emergency services yourself, this is in order that the caretakers/reception can direct the emergency services to the appropriate building when they arrive and avoid unnecessary delays in obtaining assistance.

If you are calling from a mobile or external phone, please dial (01202) 965448 – this call will be dealt with in the same way as a 222 call.

Further information about the Serious Incident procedure is available from the Health & Safety Intramap.

Display Screen Equipment (DSE)

Every member of staff who uses a PC as part of their work is required to complete the online training and assessment package ‘WorkRite’. You will be instructed how to access and complete this programme by your local DSE Assessor (who are located in every School/Professional Service). Following this they will arrange a 1:1 meeting with you to discuss and resolve any issues identified or raised.

Manual Handling

If your role requires you to carry out manual handling activities, you will be required to attend a manual handling training session organised by one of the universities manual handling trainers. In the first instance, please contact your line manager.

Risk Assessment

Risk Assessments are required by law, and individuals as well as organisations can be prosecuted where they have failed to meet the duties placed upon them for carrying out, or completing assessments. Anyone with responsibility for, supervising or organising any kind of activity involving staff or students needs to attend a training session, in addition attendance on the risk assessment workshop is compulsory for all academic staff.

A schedule of the monthly training sessions can be found on the Health & Safety Intramap.

Health & Safety Contacts

Full details and lists of individuals around the university who can assist you (e.g. the health & safety team; health & safety coordinators; first aiders; fire wardens; dse assessors; manual handling trainers etc) can be found on the Health & Safety Intramap.
