The word's out. The most exciting event to hit Bournemouth in the last two hundred years has been announced. It's the development of a virtual museum that explores the story of the people of Bournemouth and their town. The website, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will be a one-stop source of information about the history of Bournemouth.

The project is a collaboration between Bournemouth University and Bournemouth Borough Council. Collections and expertise from Bournemouth Libraries and the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum will form the foundation of the website, featuring a mix of maps, photographs, paintings, drawings, objects, musical archives and information.

Due to be launched in 2010 as part of the Bournemouth Bicentenary celebrations, it involves vital input from local communities. Even Bill Bryson, former resident and popular writer, has pledged support as patron of the project and the Echo is on board as project media sponsor. If the idea of becoming involved is appealing, you can find out more under Volunteering Opportunities.
